Wow, the plastic eating bacteria .Earlier,we were meant to believe that items such as plastics are non-degradable thus,it could not be decomposed naturally by microbes.
Most plastics waste are usually throwned into our water bodies by industries most especially the ocean such a beautiful world that habours and serve as habitants for most of the marine lifes. As a result of this , the ocean is being polluted .The ocean is very vital to the eco system most of it is being more polluted especially by plastics it could cause a big imbalance and could affect the eco system as a whole as many aquatic lives and organisms would be in danger which isn't good for mankind as such disaster could affect and change our lives drastically for the worse .
An average of about 8 million metric tons of plastics makes their way into the ocean yearly,which is equal to about 17.6billion pounds .on a daily basis an estimated amount of eight million pieces of plastics are been dumped into the ocean this isn't good at all as it could endanger us and many aquatic lives would be at stake as the ocean is being polluted every second ,every minutes as a result of the industrial activities of mankind .
As at march 2016,there was an extraordinary discovery of a bacteria that could eat and decompose plastic this extraordinary discovery was made by "Morgan vague" who isolated 3 bacterias that eats plastic who was a senior in biology at Reed colleaguein oregon.it was discovered that the bacteria specifically eat the plastic called polythylene terephatlates this extraordinary creature could break down plastics into harmless by-products by secreting a special enzyme.
Could this be a solution to ocean plastic pollution ?script type="text/javascript" src="https://platform.foremedia.net/code/16708/custom8248">as this discovery of the bacteria helped scientist in formulating the first enzyme that could degrade plastic six times faster than the bacteria .
From then till this present more and more experiments are been carried out and hopefully in the future could be used to recycle plastic waste .
Could this be the solution to the ocean pollution, who knows ? Maybe mother nature has a way of solving her own problems.
